Harry Potter visits Dumfries House

Apr 25, 2016

Harry Potter:
This name should be familiar to most thanks to the very cleverly written series of books by Scottish author, JK Rowling. Harry Potter is of course, the famous half-blood wizard and your familiarity with him will range from having heard the name, to perhaps having read a couple of books to being a fully fledged fan will all 7 books in your collection, seen all the films at least once and definitely bought the t-shirt!
Dumfries House:
Is one of Britains most beautiful stately homes. Set in 2,000 acres of picturesque Ayrshire countryside, situated 2 miles west of Cumnock, this stunning estate and 18th Century Palladian mansion has a very interesting history. More recently, in 2007, the house and estate were on the brink of being auctioned and all contents sold across the world when it was saved at the last minute by HRH The Prince Charles, Duke of Rothesay. His vision was to restore this magnificent mansion and its contents back to their former glory for present and future generations to visit and enjoy British craftsmanship at its best. Since 2007, lots of hard work has been carried out and in 2014, Dumfries House opened its doors as a prestigious wedding venue.
The Happy Couple:
Victoria and Jamie, and also Victoria's lovely mum - our story begins...

Made Marvellous first met Victoria and her mum at the Ayrshire Wedding Show in January, 2015. They visited our stand a couple of times and were particularly interested in the hand drawn chalkboard, handmade wedding stationery and small chalkboard place cards. Their wedding was booked for April 2016 at Dumfries House and they really wanted to have a Harry Potter themed wedding. Would Made Marvellous be able to help? Eh, yes please...how exciting!!

Claire is our creative genius and all ideas were put on paper at the consultation with Claire given free rein over the design of the Harry Potter chalkboard table seating and the table names were to be Harry Potter books with the bride's choice of names...

The handmade wedding invitations were pocketfold with a watercolour floral image in pastel colours and pink layered card as an accent. Thank you cards were requested in the same style. Hymn cards and ceremony readings were printed onto gold pearlescent card with matching font.

Time really does fly...the invitations were handed over at the end of January this year and it was now March and time for Claire to draw a sketch of the Harry Potter seating plan...fab! MM table plans are made as close to each wedding as possible to allow for last minute changes so onto the HP books...several ideas were considered but, as always, it all came together beautifully during the final week and by Friday 7th, we were all set, Harry was good to go...

Harry Potter Themed Table Seating Plan

The Big Day Is Finally Here:
We met up with Victoria, her mum and bridesmaid on Saturday morning. It was a gorgeous sunny day and Dumfries House and its grounds looked absolutely resplendent in the sunshine. Soooooo exciting! Claire showed them the Harry Potter seating plan and books and they were thrilled - result! We then left the bridal party to go and get ready for their 'big day' and we headed to the Pavilion. The table seating plan was set up on the easel and the Harry Potter books placed on the appropriate tables. The books had blank pages in them and you could only see the print if you had magic powers, ha! nice touch Claire. Victoria had also added a few more Harry Potter touches of her own and had also provided Harry Potter 'fun bags' for the children. Aw, truly magical! Looking forward to seeing the photographs of Victoria and Jamie's Harry Potter themed wedding and we also wish this lovely couple, a long and happy marriage.

Dumfries House Weddings:
Made Marvellous highly recommend this absolutely stunning Ayrshire wedding venue. All staff are courteous, friendly and extremely helpful. They also reminded me that they only cater for one wedding per week, on either a Friday or Saturday, so try to book, as soon as you can, to avoid disappointment.
